If you've been following food trends, you've probably heard of El Mordjene , the famous Algerian spread that went viral on social media. Its meteoric rise even surpassed that of Nutella, but the story took an unexpected turn: El Mordjene was banned in Europe. But the good news is, you can easily recreate it at home! Here's everything you need to know.

The El Mordjene phenomenon: From TikTok to the ban

It all started on TikTok, where El Mordjene captivated food lovers. Within weeks, this Algerian spread flooded supermarket shelves, and jars were flying off the shelves. Then, a dramatic turn of events: the European Commission banned the product due to health standards, specifically the lack of necessary permits in Algeria for exporting dairy products. This sparked debates and theories on social media!

But don't panic, it's very easy to recreate this delicious dough at home with the recipe I'm suggesting.

Homemade El Mordjene recipe

Ingredients for one jar:
  • 100g of roasted, skinless hazelnuts
  • 150g of icing sugar
  • 80 g of neutral oil (sunflower or rapeseed)
  • 50g of powdered milk
Instructions :
  1. Prepare the hazelnuts :
    • If your hazelnuts aren't already roasted, toast them for a few minutes in a pan over medium heat, then let them cool. If they still have their skins, rub them in a clean cloth to remove them.
  2. Grind the hazelnuts :
    • Put the roasted hazelnuts in a blender and grind them until you get a fine, but slightly grainy texture.
  3. Add the other ingredients :
    • Add the icing sugar, powdered milk, and oil to the blender. Blend again until you have a smooth, homogeneous paste. If the texture is too thick, you can add a little more oil to thin it out.
  4. Conservation :
    • Pour the spread into an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep for about 2 to 3 weeks (if you manage not to eat it before then!).
